When famous photographer Christina Eames dies unexpectedly, her daughter Mae Morton (Issa Rae) is left confused, angry and full of questions. When she finds a photograph hidden in a safe deposit box, Mae begins to investigate her mother’s young life, simultaneously beginning a passionate and unexpected affair with a journalist, Michael Block (LaKeith Stanfield).
