Marty Supreme
Alright, picture this: New York City in the 1950s. Marty Mauser is a guy who says he sells shoes for a living, but really, he’s all about ping-pong. He’s crazy about it! He also can’t resist placing bets and dreams of being the top ping-pong player ever. Even though people generally laugh at him, Marty’s sure he’s going to make it big.
Life’s kind of wild for Marty with ups and downs full of sneaky tricks, getting the boot from competitions, and victories here and there. Along his journey, he crosses paths with Carlon and Rachel—two amazing women who really leave their mark on him. They’re crucial characters as Marty’s quest for fame drives him into one big mess where he ends up losing money, love, and everything else that once felt great.
Critics over in America are pretty excited about this film. Clayton Davis from Variety describes it as this blend of comedy, action, and sports that can’t be easily boxed into one category. Then you have David Canfield at The Hollywood Reporter saying it’s massive and thrilling. And Jake Coyle from the Associated Press sees it as a fast-paced tribute to underdogs everywhere.
This movie doesn’t play by the rulebook either—it gives off vibes like those flashy 1980s films with its snappy editing style. It runs close to two-and-a-half hours but instead of just retelling someone’s life story start-to-finish like most traditional biopics—it’s more like sitting down for an adrenaline-packed thrill ride wrapped around classic American scam tales.
We’re following along with Marty Reisman—a real ping pong legend in his own right during the ’50s through ‘60s—which saw him bag quite some wins globally too: twenty-plus national AND international titles! Crazy talented but maybe not quite straight-laced—he was constantly making outrageous wagers including ones against himself while tricking bookies leading him straight towards suspension trouble frequently!
Josh Safdie coming straight outta New York took charge on this project bringing exactly what you’d expect given such unique material…
So, there’s this new movie directed by one of the Safdie brothers—Josh this time, without his brother Benny. They’re known for their intense style, and Josh won a big award at the Venice Film Festival for his last project. Now he’s tackling a solo film again. The movie’s about a New Yorker with Jewish heritage, played by an actor who’s also from New York.
You’ve got Ronald Bronstein involved too—he’s been working with the Safdies forever and is handling editing and co-writing duties here. They’re aiming high with this one; it’s like the most expensive gig A24 has backed yet, costing almost $70 million! They shot scenes in New York and even went over to Japan to wrap things up earlier this year.
The dream here? Bag some Oscar gold in 2026! And who better to pull that off than Timothée Chalamet? He dives deep into his roles; I mean, the guy’s becoming known for it now. The same way he tackled Bob Dylan last year, he’s going all-in with this character too. There’s serious buzz around him potentially getting nominated for his third Oscar—and at only thirty years old! Wouldn’t that be something?
The film’s had just one public screening so far, but there’s already chatter that if anyone can finally grab Chalamet an Oscar for Best Actor, it’s probably gonna be this performance! Sounds like we’re all gonna have to keep an eye on it come awards season.
In “Marty Supreme,” the buzz is real! Everyone’s got their eyes on this film, with a heated showdown at the Golden Globes between a rising star and his mentor, DiCaprio. It’s all happening because Safdie and A24 have pulled together an amazing group of people both in front of and behind the camera.
Gwyneth Paltrow is back in action, playing a woman starting something new with young Marty. It’s been almost three decades since she won an Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love,” so she’s aiming for another one. We’ve also got Odessa A’zion chasing those same dreams, bringing her own energy to the screen.
And it’s not just them—director Abel Ferrara jumps back into acting after eight long years. Plus, Kevin O’Leary from “Shark Tank” tries out his acting chops alongside rapper Tyler, the Creator, adding more intrigue to the mix.
The movie looks stunning too! Shot on 35mm by Darius Khondji who captures these rich brown tones that’ll stick with you. Jack Fisk handled production design—we’re talking about someone who’s worked with big names like Lynch and Scorsese—while composer Daniel Lopatin crafted the soundtrack, having wowed us before with his work on movies like “Good Time.”
“Marty Supreme” hits US theaters on December 25th. They’re hoping it’s going to shine during Christmas and kick off awards season right across America before making its way to Italy in January. So gear up for something special!
